Who is Emily the Strange you ask? And why does she get her own doll? I wondered the same thing when I first saw the Ashton Drake Emily the Strange Doll on display in a doll shop. I was tempted to buy her right then. Her translucent white skin and dark black hair and features were striking, and her expressionless face had just enough of a gothic edge to strike my fancy. But instead I went home and did a little investigative homework on Miss Emily to find out where she came from. Read along to see what I found.

Emily the Strange Doll

Emily the Strange, the doll is a 12" vinyl doll released by Ashton Drake Galleries in 2010. Her skin is very white and her features are painted in gray and black. She comes with a shoulder bag that has a cat on the front, and a cat ear headband. Emily has long black silky smooth hair with straight cut bangs, and she has articulated shoulders, elbows, hips and knees. She wears a simple black A-Line dress with white shoes. Ashton Drake includes a special offer to send away for a plus Mystery the Cat figure.

How Emily the Strange Came About

Emily the Strange's character was created in 1990 by skateboarder Rob Reger, racecar driver Matt Reed, and artist Nathan Carrico. Originally her image was put on a sticker to promote skateboards in California. Since then her likeness morphed into a series of t-shirts, stationary, and fashion accessories, along with several books and comic books. During the years since, she has become somewhat of a counterculture icon around the world.

The Emily concept was almost exactly like Rosamond's character in the children's Nate the Great books. So much so that the creators of Nate the Great sued Emily the Strange's growing merchandise empire. Eventually the parties reached an agreement. No details were given but I'm assuming there was money involved.

Emily is a thirteen year old girl who wears the same black dress every day and has four black cats as best friends. She is fascinated with dark themes and has a razor-sharp wit. She makes her own rules to live by and has quite a brooding personality. Her website describes Emily as "An artist, a dreamer, an inventor, and scientist, a skater, a rocker, and an individual." Emily the strange is decisively anti-cool and a bit peculiar. She's a pop culture icon that has caught on with young women who's style is unique and non-conformist.

Emily The Strange Has Cats As Best Friends

There are 4 black cats that hang out with Emily. Named the Bad Kitten Club, each has a distinctive personality and set of traits that set them apart from an ordinary run of the mill black cat. Of course they have to be a bit unusual to be so well connected with Emily the Strange.

Mystery - The first of Emily's cats, and the leader of the pack. Mystery is pretty and sexy and likes the color pink. With stars on her collar and in one of her eyes she has sleep cat fur and one curly whisker.

Neechee - He's the intellectual of the Bad Cats. He's somewhat of a recluse that enjoys being alone with his thoughts. Neechee is the one with the striped tail and shifty eyes. He likes spiders and bats and all things dark.

Sabbath - The rebel. He's rough and seeks out trouble. You will often find him wearing bandages as souvenirs of his latest cat fight. He's got a cut in his ear and a bent whisker that is shaped like a bolt of lightning. Sabbath says "Dude" a lot.

Miles - He's creative and artistic, with lots of ideas to share. Don't be fooled by his mellow personality, he's the fastest cat around and alert to everything. He's got really pointy ears and an X over his right eye.
