LittleMissMatched Dolls From Tonner Doll Company
Sporty Girl, Uptown Girl, Rock n Roll Girl, and Artsy Girl. They are 15 ¼ inch vinyl fashion dolls for young doll collectors. Play dolls made by Tonner. They captured my attention because 1) Tonner had not made a play doll in a long time, I think since the Magic Attic dolls in the 1990s and early 2000s, 2) they are articulated like the collectible dolls Tonner makes for adults, and 3) I love the LittleMissMatched line of socks and accessories.
The dolls were first released on the market in 2009 and one of the initial sales venues was an hour long QVC infomercial that sold a special edition doll set. She was marketed as the Uptown girl and she came in a white gift box that included lots of outfits and accessories. Although the box called her Uptown Girl, when the rest of the dolls hit the shelves it turns out she had the hair and face of the doll that ended up being called Sporty Girl.
The 4 mainline dolls were sold in FAO Schwartz and Toys r Us for around $25 - $40 until sometime in mid-2012. I’ve been told by an unofficial source that Tonner and the LittleMissMatched companies didn’t agree on some issues and the partnership was severed. Too bad, because I didn’t start collecting LittleMissMatched dolls until the end of 2012. Which means I got a couple of clearance at Toys r Us, and then had to buy the rest on the secondary markets such as eBay and Amazon. Of course I paid a premium for waiting until they were out of production to start my collection but that seems to happen to me a lot.
I have one of each of the dolls, and I managed to snag one of the original QVC dolls too but I’m not taking her out of the box. Poor blonde Uptown Girl. I always think of Jessie in Toy Story 2 and her fear of going “back in the box”. But my QVC LittleMissMatched Uptown Girl is too rare to open. I have the other 4 dolls also and those I did open. I’ve got pictures and short reviews of each.
There are also 6 additional outfits that are packaged separately. They are reversible and come with extra mismatched socks. The packages say that you can create hundreds of different fashions looks by mixing them up. I believe it. My impression is that the clothing quality isn’t quite as good as the dolls but they are still very cute – after all they are LittleMissMatched clothes.
If you want to buy the LittleMissMatched dolls and fashions now you’ll be shopping like me, in the aftermarkets. But I think these dolls are worth pursuing even if they are a little more expensive. They are adorable and high quality for a $25 play doll.
